criminal commenting

So here’s the thing. This afternoon someone left a series of abusive comments on one of my old entries – nothing too serious, but irritating nonetheless. The IP address of anyone leaving comments is logged automatically, in this case pinpointing the perpetrator to a company providing (somewhat ironically) IT solutions to the Criminal Justice sector, and I’m tempted to contact the firm and report the abuse. Is this a good idea, or am I just asking for further trouble?

  1. It’s a good idea, though you should be aware that I’m only saying this because I think it could pan out into an interesting story.

  2. go for it, could be fun

  3. Fuck it, go for it – that will teach the bastard. Friend had to sack someone for posting a nasty email to an old flame on friends reunited. The recipient forwarded it to the companys HR – who sent it to my friend (Manager) – Most expensive ?5 that chump has paid.
For God’s sake have people never heard of Hotmail.com or IP Spoofing.
Forward it to them – ask them for a copy of their company email and Internet policy whilst your at it.
They obvioulsy don’t use Sonicwall Firewalls (Blogjam is blocked on that content filter)

  4. Jokes aside, just ignore it.

I get this all the time, the problem is that a) IPs can be spoofed b) that the effort it’ll take you to report it compared to the grief the creep’ll get (realistically) won’t be in your favour.

There are a million and one trolls. More, probably. You wanna fight em all? Or just let em wash over like so much foam on the beach.

  5. I’m blocked on a firewall’s content filter? You have no idea how proud that makes me…. I shall sleep well tonight.

  6. With all due respect, what makes you think anyone at this IT company will care if one if its own is abusing some blogger…? I think the corporate world is cathing on that bloggers aren’t their friends.

  7. i think he’s earned his own demise. true, the company may not care, but hell, it’s worth the risk of that to hope they will! it is ironic. entertainingly so.

  8. I’d go for it. If someone sends abuse, then they should face the consequences.

Alternatively, you could just set the dogs on him/her.

  9. Karma will catch up with the troll. He’s is just jealous dweeb.

  10. Can’t you just block the offender’s IP-address? That’s what I once did to an idiot who abused my commenting system.

  11. Hey Fraser,
At the very least, a report and a word from his boss will make him think twice about harrassing people in the future. And to be realistic, what recoarse could have after that? Working in the corporate world unfortunately changes our behaviour not only during the working hours, but in the outside world as well. Considering the demographic his company caters to, I doubt the company will take it all that lightly. And if so, they should be put on notice and publicly lashed (well, verbally, at least). So be my humble opinion.
